An Invitation to Mindful Music Listening
Starting tomorrow morning, I’ll be hosting a daily Music and Meditation session via Zoom, which will happen every weekday morning at 7:30 am pacific time. If you need help figuring out what time to log on where you are, here’s a handy Time Zone Converter.
I have made music as a mindfulness practice for decades, and recently began expanding into group mindful music-making with my queer contemplative improvisation group, Cryptid Soup. For my part in these morning sessions, I will begin with instructions for listening and a short breathing exercise, followed by playing live improvised ambient music for 30 minutes. That will be followed by 10 minutes of silent contemplation, after which folks can share their experience if they wish.
The goal for participants is to listen to the music mindfully, staying present and maintaining focus on the music and sounds. When your mind wanders, you can observe those thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without judgment and bring your awareness gently back to the music. Hopefully, you will experience and learn a new way of meditation, or at least start your day with a calming experience.
